Blue Light Protection for Skin
If your day runs on screens — laptop by nine, phone at lunch, a few episodes at night — you have probably wondered whether blue light protection for skin is something you actually need, or just the beauty industry's latest scare. Here is an honest answer: the research is still developing. What we can do is explain what blue light is, where your real exposure comes from, and what sensible daily protection looks like — no fear-mongering, no miracle promises.
This guide comes from Jane Fransman, the CIDESCO-qualified dermal clinician and cosmetic formulator behind Skin Solutions by Jane, who developed our SKIN SAVER blue light range here in Western Australia.
What blue light actually is
Blue light is part of ordinary visible light — the short-wavelength, high-energy end of the spectrum, which is why you will also see it called high-energy visible (HEV) light. It is not ultraviolet light. UV is invisible, higher-energy again, and remains the well-established cause of sunburn and premature skin ageing.
So where does skin come into it? Early research suggests that high doses of visible light may contribute to free-radical activity at the skin's surface, and to visible pigmentation changes, particularly in deeper skin tones. But most of that research uses light far more intense than a phone screen, and long-term studies on everyday device use simply do not exist yet.
That is the honest position: blue light is worth taking seriously as part of your overall light exposure, and the science is young. Anyone promising you screens are destroying your skin — or that a cream makes screens irrelevant — is ahead of the evidence.
Where blue light exposure really comes from
This surprises most people: the sun is by far the biggest source of blue light you encounter. A bright day outdoors delivers vastly more HEV light than any screen. Which is why the single most effective light-protection habit remains the unglamorous one — daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and sensible sun protection, especially under an Australian sky. No blue light product replaces sunscreen, ours included.
Screens and LED lighting are a different kind of exposure: much lower intensity, but close to your face, for hours, nearly every day of your working life. Add LED-lit offices, tablets and televisions, and modern skin spends most of its waking hours under artificial light. That cumulative, close-range pattern is what blue light skincare is designed around — a sensible extra layer of daily support, not a replacement for sun protection.
Sensible daily habits before you buy anything
We would rather you trust us because we tell you the free stuff first. These habits cost nothing and do genuine work:
- Wear sunscreen every day. The sun is your biggest blue light source, and UV remains the proven skin-ager. This one is non-negotiable.
- Give your eyes and skin breaks from the screen. Regular short breaks and a little more distance from the display reduce your cumulative close-range exposure.
- Keep your routine gentle. This is our house philosophy for every skin concern: clean and care for skin with gentle products, and never strip or dry it out — stripped skin copes worse with every stressor, light included.
- Support your skin daily. A consistent morning routine — hydrating layers plus a protective moisturiser — helps keep the skin's surface resilient through long screen days.
Once those habits are in place, dedicated blue light protection skincare becomes the reasonable next step for people who spend serious hours in front of screens. That is exactly what our SKIN SAVER range was formulated for.
THE SKIN SAVER ROUTINE
A daily blue light protection skincare routine
The SKIN SAVER Dynamics collection is Jane's answer to screen-heavy modern life: a three-step routine formulated to help prepare and protect skin from daily solar and artificial blue light exposure. Each product is 100% natural and specifically formulated with the latest in biotechnology, built around radiation-resistant microorganisms — organisms studied for how they cope with light and radiation, used here as a skincare ingredient technology. The three steps are designed to be layered in order, and all three ship Australia-wide with Express Post shipping.

Step 1 — prepare: Pre-Serum Spray
$55.00 · 45 ml
The first layer after cleansing: a light, silky mist designed to prepare your skin for the serum and moisturiser and support better absorption of the key ingredients that follow. A few seconds each morning, and the rest of the routine works harder for you.

Step 2 — protect: Serum Concentrate
$137.00 · 30 ml
The centre of the routine — the concentrated blue light serum, formulated for daily use on skin that spends its days under screens and artificial lighting. It absorbs well, sits comfortably under moisturiser and makeup, and the dropper makes the bottle last.

Step 3 — seal: Protecting Moisturiser
$99.00 · 50 ml
The finishing step — the range's blue light moisturiser, luxuriously light in texture and designed to be applied after the pre-serum and serum, leaving skin feeling fresh and hydrated through the day. Only taking one step? Start here.
Who this routine suits — and what to expect
If you work at a screen most of the day, game or stream in the evenings, create content, or spend your week under LED office lighting, you are exactly who the SKIN SAVER range was formulated for. It layers under sunscreen and makeup, so it slots into an existing morning routine rather than replacing it.
Be realistic about timeframes, because we always are: skin renews itself roughly every four to six weeks, so give any new routine that long of daily consistency before you judge it. And keep the free habits going — sunscreen, screen breaks, gentle cleansing. Products support good habits; they do not substitute for them.

YOUR QUESTIONS
Blue light skincare FAQs
Does blue light from screens really damage skin?
Honestly: the research is still developing. Early studies suggest high doses of visible light may contribute to free-radical activity and pigmentation changes, but those studies mostly use light far stronger than a screen, and long-term research on everyday device use does not exist yet. Our position is balanced — take your total light exposure seriously, keep sunscreen non-negotiable, and treat blue light skincare as a sensible daily support layer.
Is blue light the same as UV light?
No. Blue light is part of visible light — the high-energy end you can actually see, sometimes called HEV light. UV is invisible, carries more energy, and is the well-established cause of sunburn and premature skin ageing. That is why sunscreen remains the foundation of any light-protection routine, and why blue light products are an addition to sun protection rather than a replacement for it.
Do I still need sunscreen if I use blue light skincare?
Yes, every day. The sun is by far the biggest source of blue light you encounter, and it delivers UV as well — which no blue light product addresses. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and apply the SKIN SAVER routine underneath it: pre-serum, serum, moisturiser, then sunscreen as your final morning step before makeup.
What order do I apply the SKIN SAVER products in?
Cleanse first, then apply the three steps in order: the Pre-Serum Spray to prepare the skin, the Serum Concentrate as your protective core step, and the Protecting Moisturiser to finish. The pre-serum is designed to support absorption of the key ingredients in your serum and moisturiser, so the order genuinely matters. In the morning, follow with sunscreen.
Can I start with just one product from the range?
Yes. The three steps are formulated to work together for best results, but the Protecting Moisturiser is the natural single starting point — one daily product, luxuriously light in texture, that replaces your current morning moisturiser. If you later want to build the full routine, add the Pre-Serum Spray and Serum Concentrate underneath it.
