Psoriasis-Prone Skin: A Gentle Skincare Routine
Let's start with the most important thing on this page: psoriasis is a medical condition, and it is managed by your GP or dermatologist — not by a skincare range. Good psoriasis skincare is the cosmetic layer that sits alongside whatever your doctor advises: gentle cleansing, careful care of dry flaky areas, and daily moisturising so skin feels softer and more comfortable.
That layer matters more than most people realise, because the wrong products — harsh soaps, hot water, gritty scrubs — can leave already-dry skin feeling tighter, itchier and more irritated. I'm Jane, a CIDESCO-qualified dermal clinician with more than 40 years in dermal therapy. This guide covers the routine I recommend for psoriasis-prone skin: what to change first, an honest answer to the exfoliation question, and when skincare is not the right tool for the job.
Psoriasis skincare: what it can and can't do
Psoriasis is a systemic condition — it starts inside the body, where skin cells renew much faster than usual and build up as dry, flaky, often red patches. Because the cause is internal, no cleanser, serum or cream can switch that process off. Anyone promising otherwise is not being straight with you — our own CLINIC Cream Complex (Psoriasis) says plainly on its own page: it does not cure psoriasis.
What thoughtful psoriasis skincare can do is real and worth having. It can cleanse without stripping, so skin feels less tight and irritated after washing. It can soften dry areas and refine the look of flaky patches. And it can keep skin comfortable between medical appointments, which many of my clients tell me is what they wanted all along.
Why harsh soaps make dry, flaky skin feel worse
Traditional soaps and strong foaming detergents are designed to cut through oil — and they do, including the natural oils your skin barrier depends on. On psoriasis-prone skin, which is already dry and easily irritated, that squeaky-clean feeling is really the feeling of a stripped barrier. Stripped skin loses moisture faster, feels tighter and itchier, and flakes more visibly.
This is the heart of my philosophy at Skin Solutions by Jane: clean and care for skin with gentle products — never strip or dry it out, because stripped skin makes every problem worse. For psoriasis-prone skin, that means a mild, low-foaming cleanser, lukewarm rather than hot water, and patting dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing.
Two practical extras make a surprising difference. Rinse shampoo and conditioner off carefully — letting them run down your body can leave irritating residues on sensitive areas. And moisturise within a few minutes of showering, while skin is still slightly damp.
Is exfoliating good for psoriasis? An honest answer
This is the question I'm asked most often, so here is a careful, honest answer. Very gentle exfoliation of loose, dry surface flakes — on intact skin only — can help skin feel smoother and let your moisturiser sit better, rather than perching on top of a layer of loose scale. Used that way, gentle exfoliation has a sensible place in a psoriasis-prone skin routine.
But the boundaries matter more than the benefit:
- Never scrub at plaques. Scrubbing, picking or dragging at raised patches irritates them and can make skin feel far worse.
- Never exfoliate broken, cracked, bleeding or inflamed skin. If an area stings, weeps or is flaring, leave it completely alone.
- Gentle only. No gritty body scrubs, no rough gloves or brushes on affected areas, no acids or strong actives unless your doctor has okayed them.
- Your doctor's advice always comes first. If your GP or dermatologist has told you not to exfoliate, don't — this page is general information, not a second opinion.
Start with once or twice a week on intact skin, see how your skin responds, and stop at the first sign of stinging or extra redness. Gentle and occasional beats vigorous every single time.
A SIMPLE ROUTINE
Three gentle steps, face and body
01
Cleanse gently
Wash with a mild, non-stripping cleanser and lukewarm water — morning and evening for your face, once a day for the body. Skin should feel soft and clean afterwards, never tight or squeaky. Love a bar in the shower? Switch to a gentle soap-alternative cleansing bar rather than traditional soap.
02
Smooth loose flakes, carefully
On intact skin, use a very gentle exfoliant once or twice a week to soften and lift loose, dry surface flakes — following every boundary above. Skip this step entirely during a flare, on cracked or inflamed areas, or if your doctor has advised against it.
03
Hydrate and support
The step that earns its keep. Apply a soothing serum to clean skin, then seal it with a rich moisturising cream, morning and night — and always within a few minutes of showering. Consistent daily moisturising is what keeps dry areas feeling softer and calmer.
Give any new routine a full skin cycle — four to six weeks of honest consistency — before you judge it. Many people notice skin feels more comfortable sooner, but steady and gentle is what wins here.
THE CLINIC RANGE
The CLINIC range for psoriasis-prone skin

When to see your GP or dermatologist
Skincare is the comfort layer — your doctor is the one managing the condition itself. Please see your GP or dermatologist if patches are spreading, changing colour or darkening, cracking or bleeding, or affecting your sleep, mood or confidence. The same goes for sore or stiff joints, which can be related and deserve a proper medical check. And if you are using prescribed treatments, keep using them exactly as directed — nothing on this page replaces them.
Healthdirect Australia has a clear overview of psoriasis, its triggers and the treatment options available here in Australia, and DermNet offers a deeper dermatology reference if you want the detail.
If it's the day-to-day cosmetic side you'd like help with — which products suit your skin, and how to build the routine around your doctor's advice — that is exactly what my consultations are for. Book a consultation and we'll go through your skin and your current routine together, one on one.

YOUR QUESTIONS
Psoriasis-prone skincare FAQs
Can a skincare routine make psoriasis go away?
No — and you should be wary of any product that claims it can. Psoriasis is a medical condition managed by your GP or dermatologist, sometimes with prescription treatments. A gentle skincare routine works alongside that care on the cosmetic level: cleansing without stripping, softening dry areas and keeping skin feeling more comfortable day to day. Think of it as support for how your skin feels and looks, never a substitute for medical treatment.
Is exfoliating good for psoriasis?
Handled very gently, it can have a place. Softly smoothing loose, dry flakes from intact skin can help skin feel smoother and let moisturiser work into skin rather than sitting on loose scale. But never scrub at plaques, never exfoliate broken, cracked or inflamed skin, and skip it entirely during a flare. Once or twice a week is plenty to start, and your doctor's advice always overrides anything you read here.
Can I use these products on my body as well as my face?
Yes. Psoriasis-prone patches commonly appear on the arms, legs and body as well as the face, so the CLINIC Cleanser is designed to be suitable for the whole body, and the Cream Complex is made for all areas of the body. The Soften & Calm Cleansing Cube works as a gentle soap alternative in the shower, on the face and body alike.
Do the CLINIC psoriasis-prone formulations contain steroids or coal tar?
No. The CLINIC formulations for psoriasis-prone skin are made from natural ingredients and contain no steroids and no coal tar — which also means none of the tar smell many people associate with traditional psoriasis washes. They are cosmetic products, so if your doctor has prescribed a steroid or tar-based treatment, keep using it as directed; these products sit alongside medical care, not in place of it.
How long until my skin feels more comfortable?
Give any new routine a full skin cycle — around four to six weeks of consistent daily use — before judging it. Many people notice skin feels softer and less tight sooner than that, especially once harsh soaps are out of the picture, but steady daily moisturising is where the real difference builds. If your skin becomes more irritated at any point, stop the new product and check in with your GP or dermatologist.
This page is general information only and is not medical advice or a substitute for it. Psoriasis is a medical condition — please see your GP or dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment, and keep using any prescribed treatment exactly as directed.
